Concept & Approach
At the heart of the design is a bar graph that doubles as the stripes of the American flag. Each stripe represents a data point, visually illustrating the stark wealth disparities that persist despite equivalent levels of education. The resulting image creates the impression of a tattered flag, symbolizing America's failure to uphold its promise of equality for all.
The intentional use of the American flag carries dual symbolism: it reflects both the ideals of equality and freedom that the nation aspires to and the deep contradictions exposed by the data. The torn, uneven effect visually reinforces the message that systemic inequality fractures these ideals.
Purpose & Message
The project confronts a prevalent misconception that the racial wealth gap is merely a product of personal shortcomings like lack of education or effort. By juxtaposing wealth data against educational attainment, the poster reveals that systemic barriers persist regardless of academic achievement. The goal is to spark conversation and inspire a deeper understanding of racial inequality as a structural issue.

Key Takeaways
This project was an exercise in using data visualization to tell a powerful story through design. It required a balance of creativity and sensitivity to ensure the message resonated without overwhelming the viewer. The tattered flag metaphor successfully connects the data to a broader cultural narrative, provoking thought and emotion.
Design has the power to transform abstract numbers into impactful stories. The Tattered Dream exemplifies how thoughtful design can challenge perceptions, confront uncomfortable truths, and foster meaningful dialogue.
